Straight razor care

The blade of a razor
The blade of a razor

The cutting edge of a razor blade is so thin, that it is almost invisible to the human eye. This makes the blade flexible, so it can adjust to all parts of the face. The blade of a thoroughly and hollow grinded razor blade bends when pressed on top of a thumbnail. Therefore, a razor blade"™s cutting edge is also very sensitive. It is made for shaving beard hair, and is easily destroyed when in contact with other materials.

(This should also serve as a reference for our clients involved in the mafia, or planning to stab their wives - Such activities aren"™t necessarily good for your razor blade, and we would advise to switch to other blades)

Also bad for the razor blade is falling down. A many blades have been irreversibly damaged this way.

The Razor Care

In most cases, razor blades are manufactured from non-stainless carbon steel or stain resistant chrome steel, and therefore need thorough care.

Blade and handle should be cleaned with water and dried after every use, while taking care not to touch the cutting edge.

In cases of longer non-usage it is sufficient to oil the blade. Commonly used for such a process is gun oil. We recommend an acid-free speciality oil.

STROPPING

A careful wipe down with a leather strop before the shave maintains the blade"™s sharpness for many months. The wipe cleans and aligns the cutting edge. But careful: If you apply too much pressure with the strop, the cutting edge could get damaged or destroyed.

A careful use and regular care can lengthen the life of a razor blade for many decades. If the razor blade with time should lose its sharpness, that cannot be restored with a wipe down, we recommend to take the blade to an expert for a professional regrind.
